Bad ping and lag

Mike's picture

Had trouble on the Tactical server. Ping was ~250, had lag and trouble with map graphics. E2 then joined and had NO trouble at all. I rebooted but still had a high ping...maybe this polar storm stuff? Anyway in the end another player joined and had no trouble either so it was most likely me.

Tony how do I ping the server...trying to remember?

I also saw graphic problems and will post a screen shot.

A netspeed test to a near city looked normal but the UK and the server is a long way off:)

Mike, the screenshot you sent indicates vector data corruption. First of all I would try to focus on the most realistic cause: memory overheating (either or both: video and system memory). Check their temperature. Most semiconductors used in PCs are usually rated up to 55°C. Use a temperature gun if you have one.

As for the lag, let's ping the server first:
1. On windows 7 and 8 type in the desktop search bar cmd and run the command. (or start "command prompt" from start menu)
2. A black terminal window will pop up. Type in ping smclan.org and hit enter.

Yes it could be overheating or my video card. Just seems odd because it as again -16C outside and I have trouble making it up to +18C inside with a good fire in the stove:)

Attached is the ping...higher then I expected.

Memory cards should have heatsinks nowadays. I would check whether there is a free airflow around them and the case's vents. Ambient temperature is not considerebale when heat can build up around the semiconductors.

We had some lag yesterday (afternoon here) on the Tactical Server. I was not too bad but my ping jumped around from ~100 to ~350. There were three players on and one of the other players had some lag. Maybe nothing is wrong but just putting a note in the forums about it.

Thanks for the heads up, Mike. Likely it is caused by some nasty bots again. It is bed time for me now, but I will look into it tomorrow. Hope you are well. Have you received my email a week ago?

Thanks Recognition I will check. At first I only had 512Mbit (yes 1/2 Gbit) but I now have a 2Gbit connection. It maybe still be set lower then T3.

Mike, for weeks I am playing almost daily but I have not seen this issue. Everything is nice and smooth on my side.

Our small internet cable company was sold to a new internet suppler last summer. They sent a notice that they will be updating hardware from time to time causing slowdowns and possible short outages. I have had to reboot my cable modem a few times in the last few months so this all may be on my end.

Good news is I now have 2Gbit down and 1Gbit up which is 2X over the last company and at no extra cost.
